RED ALERT:
Power Plant
As you may have read in the New York Times
this morning (front page below the fold) Con Ed "plans to restart
the most polluting power plant in New York
City" just upwind from us at Hudson and John Sts. The NYS
Dep't of
Environmental Conservation has proposed to
approve Con Edison's plan to restart the large, dirty oil-fired
boiler at Con Ed's Hudson Avenue Station next to the Brooklyn Navy
Yard. There will be no upgrades to control technology
installed on the boiler. Instead, this boiler will be operated
in
basically the same way as in past
decades using 1950's technology. The plant was built in 1951
and as a result is not required to meet current emission
standards. It will be permitted to release 850 tons of
nitrogen dioxides ("the main contributor to smog") and 918 tons of
sulfur dioxide ("the main contributor to acid rain") on an annual
basis, as well as a host
of other
pollutants. The deadline for public comments opposing the
project is this
FRIDAY, May 4.
And as if
restarting a toxic power plant boiler isn't bad enough, Con Ed
wants to do it without even a single public hearing! The New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will
decide by May 3rd whether to require a public hearing. Here's what
you can do to voice your opposition to reopening of this plant and
prevent the further deterioration of the air quality.
_Call the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at
(718) 482-4997 by May 3rd.Tell them you oppose Con Edison's plan
to restart Boiler #100 at their Hudson Avenue Station and that you
demand a public hearing.
_Call our state representatives in
Albany and let them know of your
opposition by May
3rd.
